Scripture
Hebrews 1:1-2
Hebrews contrasts earlier prophetic revelation with God's climactic speech in the Son.
On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.
God has spoken in the Son
Hebrews does not deny earlier prophets. It places God’s final and decisive revelation in the Son who made the universe.
Where this passage comes up
- God is hiddenThe hiddenness argument assumes love must guarantee belief now. Christianity questions that premise and points to Jesus as God's public answer.
- The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus ChristAn inward witness cannot settle whether a book is scripture. The Bible's test is whether a message matches the apostles' gospel, even when an angel brings it.
- The apostolic gospel is finalPaul and Jude describe the apostles' message as a trust to guard. So any later revelation can be tested by one question: does it preach the same gospel?
- Jesus is GodThe New Testament places Jesus inside the identity of Israel's one God, the Creator, while still distinguishing him from the Father.
