Scripture
John 14:26
Jesus says the Father will send the Holy Spirit to teach and remind the disciples.
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.
The Advocate teaches
Jesus describes the Holy Spirit with personal agency: the Advocate is sent, teaches, and reminds the disciples of Jesus’ words.
Where this passage comes up
- Muhammad was foretold in the BibleRead in context, Moses' promised prophet comes from Israel, and the Advocate Jesus promised is the Holy Spirit, sent to his own disciples soon after Jesus left them.
- The Holy Spirit is not a personThe Bible's spirit teaches, speaks for itself, chooses, forbids, and can be lied to and grieved, and it is named with the Father and the Son. A force does not do those things.
- The Holy Spirit is a personWhat the Spirit does, and how he can be treated, are things only a person does or suffers. A single pronoun carries little of the weight.
- The Trinity is monotheismThe Bible says there is one God, distinguishes the Father, Son, and Spirit from one another, and treats each as that one God. The Trinity is the summary that keeps all three.
